Classical interpretations

Wearing a sword in a dream signifies a high official position.

Ja'far al-Sadiq said that seeing a sword is interpreted in six ways: a child, official employment, truth or right, benefit, wealth and property, and victory over an enemy.

Seeing a sharp, bright, and beautiful sword signifies truthful speech and eloquence. Giving one's wife a sword in its sheath signifies a daughter, and the wife will give birth to a girl. Conversely, if one's wife gives him a sword in its sheath, she will give birth to a boy. A sword may signify a child, the ruler, and dominion. The silver on the hilt and the blade of the sword may likewise signify a child.

Seeing a sword also signifies provision, dominion, knowledge, wealth, and literature. Reaching out and picking up a sword lying on the ground signifies seeking the truth and finding it.

Seeing the sheath of one's sword broken signifies the death of the dreamer's wife. Jabir al-Maghribi said that possessing a sword of gold signifies benefit coming from eminent people, while possessing an iron sword signifies soundness of one's affairs and strength.

Wearing four swords made respectively of iron, copper, tin, and wood signifies, for a married person, four sons: the iron sword signifies that one son will be brave and heroic; the copper sword that one will be wealthy and abundantly provided for; the tin sword that one will have a bad disposition; and the wooden sword that one will be a hypocrite, because a wooden sword is useless.

Seeing one's sword become blunt and unable to cut signifies that one's words will be ineffective and ignored.

Seeing the hilt of one's sword broken, if one's parents are alive, signifies the death of one of them.

Seeing the blade of the sword broken signifies the death of a servant. Being given a sword signifies a wife. Luqman, peace be upon him, is quoted as saying: 'A woman is like a sword; do you not see how beautiful its appearance is and how harsh its effect may be?' Seeing a sword is also interpreted as provision, knowledge, a wife, dominion, and a child.

Seeing a sword made of glass in one's hand, if one's wife is pregnant, signifies that the child to be born will have a short life.

Seeing the sheath of one's sword broken while the sword itself remains sound signifies the death of the dreamer's wife while the unborn child survives.

Seeing a sword in one's hand longer than the enemy's sword signifies victory over the enemy.
