Hell

Classical interpretations

Seeing Hell in a dream is interpreted as great sins. For Hell is the place of punishment for sinners.

Seeing oneself enter Hell is a sign of poverty and want, sorrow and grief in the life of this world, and of torment in the hereafter.

Ja'far al-Sadiq said: Seeing Hell in a dream is interpreted as follows: a) wickedness and unbelief, b) hardship and grief, c) evil and corruption, d) famine and misery.

Ibn Kathir said: Seeing Hell in a dream signifies the loss of wealth and honor, becoming poor after being rich, leaving prosperity for hardship and want, falling into distress and prison, loss and ruin in the world, humiliation and contempt, and departing without faith at the last breath.

Seeing the angel named Malik, the keeper of Hell, signifies the love of Allah, the exalted and generous, of His Messenger and of the believers, honor and sovereignty, keeping away from hypocrisy, deliverance from sins, and zeal in religion. His holiness al-Nabulsi said: Whoever sees himself enter Hell drawing his sword speaks obscenity and evil, wicked words. Whoever sees himself enter Hell smiling is wicked, rebellious, defiant toward his Lord, and rejoicing in the blessings of the world.

Ibn Sirin said: If a person sees himself enter Hell in a dream, it signifies the loss of his riches and wealth, falling into evil questioning, becoming one of the people of innovation in the world, and a bathhouse, an oven, and places in which fire is lit.

Seeing oneself saved from Hell signifies repenting of sin; sitting in Hell, eating food, and drinking its drink signifies persisting in sin. Again, seeing Malik or one of the keepers of Hell seize oneself and throw one into the fire is a sign of falling into abasement and contempt; seeing oneself come out of Hell after entering it is a sign that one will enter Paradise and repent of one's sins and errors.

Seeing oneself with a black face and deep blue eyes and being in Hell signifies being friends with the enemies of Allah.

Seeing Hell openly in a dream is also interpreted as the punishment of the sultan and of Allah. It has also been said: Seeing Hell and entering it in a dream is a sign of losing one's rank in the world. Sometimes this dream also signifies passing from wealth to poverty, from fellowship and familiarity to estrangement and discord, remaining forever in prison, and being despised and abased in the world.

Seeing the keeper of Hell turn toward oneself with favour signifies finding safety from the fire and being secure. Again, seeing one of the keepers of Hell in a dream is a sign of falling into the hands of the police and being called to account. If a man in prison sees the keeper of Hell smile at him in a dream, it signifies release from prison.

Seeing oneself imprisoned in Hell forever but not knowing when one entered Hell signifies poverty, deprivation, and sorrow in the world. In short, seeing Hell in a dream signifies evil, rebellion, sin, toil, and abasement. Whoever sees such a dream should come to his senses at once and repent of his errors. For one who repents is as though he had never sinned.
