Classical interpretations
Seeing a river signifies a person of high rank and great standing who is pure and righteous.
Seeing one of the rivers of Paradise and drinking from it signifies knowledge, the Noble Qur'an, goodness and righteousness, joy, and happiness.
Entering a river signifies being in the company of great people and receiving spiritual benefit from them. Leaping from one side of a river to the other signifies deliverance from sorrow and grief, victory over an enemy, and relief.
Drinking from the clear and pure water of a river signifies a good life, purity of heart, benefit, and livelihood.
Jabir al-Maghribi said that seeing a river signifies sharp intelligence and abundant livelihood.
Seeing a pure and clear river flow into one's own house signifies ease in affairs, wealth, property, and livelihood. A clear river also signifies righteous deeds and enduring provision. A muddy and foul-smelling river signifies bad deeds and sin that bring a person nearer to Hell.
It is said that seeing one's own body become a river signifies dying while spitting blood. Walking in a river and upon the water signifies the dreamer's good intention, perfection of faith, and truthfulness in religion.
Seeing al-Kawthar, in accordance with the verse meaning “Indeed, We have given you al-Kawthar,” signifies victory over enemies and receiving many blessings.
Drinking from al-Kawthar signifies knowledge, good deeds, the Noble Sunnah, and a good end. If an unbeliever sees this dream, guidance will be granted; if a sinner sees it, the person will repent and turn toward the Truth.
Seeing the rivers of Paradise signifies livelihood, blessing, pardon, and forgiveness. The river of milk signifies the natural disposition of Islam; the river of wine signifies being intoxicated with love of God and keeping away from what is forbidden; and the river of honey signifies knowledge, wisdom, and the Noble Qur'an.
