Classical interpretations
The benefits of the sea are many, but not everyone who enters the sea obtains pearls. And safety lies at the edge of the sea. For this reason, if a person sees the sea in a dream, it signifies a strong, mighty, compassionate, and just sultan, that is, a head of state, whom people need. If a merchant sees this dream, it signifies wealth; if a worker or laborer sees it, it signifies his master.
Seeing oneself drink all the water of the sea signifies possessing many of the blessings of the world. And that person will live long.
Ja'far al-Sadiq said: Seeing the sea in a dream is interpreted in six ways: a) a king and sultan, b) the elder and leader of the people, c) a scholar, d) knowledge, e) wealth, f) work and effort...
Ibn Sirin said: "Whoever sees himself walk on the sea without his feet getting wet will be saved from the fire of Hell and will be one of the righteous people in this world." Sometimes seeing oneself walk on the sea signifies a journey, deliverance from sorrow, grief, and distress, and great good. If a person sees himself drown in the sea, it is a sign of possessing the world and its riches.
Seeing oneself split the sea from one end to the other signifies deliverance from sorrow and grief and attaining safety and joy.
Seeing the sea also signifies the fulfillment of one's wishes and desires and peace of heart.
Seeing oneself take water from the sea and fill a vessel is interpreted as accumulating much wealth. Or Allah Most High will give that person such power that through it he will amass wealth stronger and wider than the sea. Allah Most High gives without measure to whomever He wills.
Seeing oneself enter the sea signifies entering the service of a sultan whose title is like the sea. If a person sees himself sitting or lying in the middle of the sea, it is a sign that he will enter the presence of the sultan.
Seeing oneself drink water from the sea is a sign of acquiring knowledge and good manners in proportion to the amount drunk. Whoever sees himself cross the sea will take spoils from the enemy's wealth and obtain the pearl of his wish. For the Children of Israel crossed the sea and took Pharaoh's wealth as spoils.
Seeing oneself wash in the sea signifies release from sins and faults and the departure of sorrow and grief. If a sick man sees himself wash and perform ablution in the sea, it signifies that Allah Most High will heal him; if a person in debt sees it, it signifies release from debt and distress and safety from what he fears. If a person sees himself standing upon the sea, it signifies attaining something unexpected from the head of state.
Seeing oneself swim in the sea and sink out of sight signifies the end of one's life and destruction.
Seeing the water cover oneself and dying there is a sign of dying as a martyr. For one who drowns in the sea is a martyr. It has been said: Sometimes seeing the sea signifies a tormenting and destructive strife. The sea dream may even signify Hell. The sea dream is also a sign of travel, of war, and of wealth and spoils gained in war. Sweet sea water is interpreted as a believer, and bitter sea water as an unbeliever. The sea sometimes signifies rain falling from the sky, flashing lightning, and what the waters sweep along. The sea dream is even a sign of glorifying and praising Allah. For when a person sees the sea he says "Glory be to Allah", remembers the infinite power of Allah, and magnifies and praises his Lord. The murmuring of the waters is also a kind of remembrance of Allah.
Seeing oneself take water from the sea with one's palm, pour it into a ship on the sea, and fill it signifies a long-lived child. It is likely that the person who sees this dream will have a long-lived child. If a person sees himself take water from the sea and drink it, it signifies attaining knowledge and understanding in proportion to the water drunk. If the water drunk is murky, it signifies fear and terror. If a person sees the Atlantic Ocean, it is a sign of a short life. This dream also signifies reaching the unseen and the visible worlds after a long life.
Seeing oneself urinate into the sea is interpreted as sin.
Seeing the sea overflow and its waves crash against one another signifies falling into fear and hardship during a journey. Sometimes the sea signifies the world and its incomprehensible states. Daniel (peace be upon him) said: Seeing the sea in a dream is always interpreted as a caliph and sultan or a virtuous scholar.
Seeing the sea pure, clean, and calm signifies a just head of state.
Seeing it murky, bad, and turbulent signifies a tyrannical and oppressive sultan. Jabir al-Maghribi also said: Seeing the sea dry up signifies the death of the head of state, a shortfall in his army, or his defeat before the enemy.
Seeing one of the sea creatures speak to oneself signifies revealing the hidden affairs and secrets of the government. If a person sees the sea rise from the earth, it signifies the downfall of a tyrannical and oppressive head of state.
Seeing oneself dive into the sea and bring out pearls is a sign of wealth and blessing that will come into one's hands.
Seeing oneself take water from the sea and drink it signifies becoming prosperous and happy through knowledge and wealth.
Seeing the sea water flood a place signifies that a just governor will come there, and everyone will benefit from him.
