Classical interpretations
Seeing unbaked clay signifies gathering wealth for one's children and household.
Eating baked clay signifies backbiting and useless speech.
Jabir al-Maghribi said that clay is interpreted as follows: white and green clay signify lawful wealth; yellow clay signifies illness; red clay signifies music and amusement; black clay signifies grief and sorrow.
Kirmani said that if a sick person sees themselves walking in clay, the illness will be prolonged; if the person is distressed, their distress and sorrow increase. Kneading clay or making bricks from it is not a good sign.
Abu Sa'id al-Wa'iz said: Seeing clay or mortar used for building signifies piety, religion, wealth, and blessing. Having some clay in one's hand and eating it signifies earning money. According to some interpreters, making bricks or adobe from clay signifies an increase in relatives and friends. Falling into a great amount of clay and being unable to escape signifies death.
Seeing mud signifies illness and humiliation, except for someone whose livelihood depends on mud, for whom it signifies goodness and blessing. Building with mud signifies religion and faith. Dry mud signifies wealth.
Ibn Sirin says mud formed by rainwater or a watercourse signifies grief and sorrow. Sinking into mud in a lake or river signifies distress coming from the authorities; sinking into mud also signifies excessive concern with worldly affairs. Plastering the blessed grave of the Prophet with mud signifies going on Hajj. Plastering one's own house with wet mud signifies being a righteous and good person. At times mud signifies that death is near, because the human being was created from earth and returns to it.
Entering mud and smearing oneself with it signifies illness and misery.
Eating baked clay signifies backbiting and slander. For a sick person, seeing mud signifies that death is near.
