Classical interpretations
Al-Nabulsi says that seeing a garden signifies seeking forgiveness, and seeking forgiveness is itself likened to a garden. Watering one's garden signifies intimacy with one's spouse.
Entering a garden with dry, fallen, yellow leaves signifies sorrow and distress. A garden may signify a woman, with its trees representing her family and children and its fruit interpreted accordingly. An unknown garden may signify the Qur'an because its readers gather fruits of wisdom from it; its sweet and sour fruits are likened to glad tidings and warnings. It may signify the blessings of Paradise, a market, a bridal chamber, beneficial property, a mosque, a school, or a military barracks.
Ibn Sirin says that being in one's own fruit-filled garden and eating its fruit signifies marriage to and benefit from a wealthy woman. Sowing seed in the garden signifies a child; digging it signifies marriage. Kirmani says that a garden may signify a wealthy property owner. A flood uprooting a flourishing garden's trees signifies the death of a ruler or notable in that place.
Ja'far al-Sadiq interprets a garden as spouse, child, livelihood, wealth, richness, joy, or servant.
Finding something fragrant in one's garden signifies a child of good character; a foul-smelling thing signifies a disobedient child; a plum tree signifies a child who will learn knowledge and manners. In general, the garden may signify spouse, child, property, good living, and release from sorrow.
