Ibn Sirin said that seeing or playing chess signifies slander and false speech. If a person sees himself playing chess, the dream signifies that he has a lowly enemy.

Abu Sa'id al-Wa'iz said that playing chess signifies both players attaining honor, esteem, and high standing. Playing chess without knowing how to play it is interpreted in three ways: forgetting the prayer, spending one's wealth where it does not belong, and stirring hatred and resentment in the heart.

Seeing a chess set that is not being played signifies people who have been removed from their positions; seeing chess being played signifies men of high rank. Al-Nabulsi said that seeing chess signifies enmity, war, compensation, becoming acquainted with secrets, passing from one condition to another, acquiring a profession, disturbance of temperament, and travel.

Seeing a pawn among the chess pieces signifies that the dreamer's condition will be righteous from beginning to end.
