Classical interpretations
Seeing that the whole time is night signifies hardship in livelihood for the dreamer. But this interpretation holds only if there is no moonlight or brightness in the night.
Ibn Sirin said: Seeing a dark night is interpreted as sorrow, grief, and distress.
Seeing a moonlit, bright night with shining stars is relief, joy, happiness, and an easy livelihood.
Ja'far al-Sadiq said: Seeing darkness is interpreted in five ways. a) Unbelief, b) bewilderment, c) hardship in livelihood, d) misfortune and sin, e) going astray.
Seeing oneself come out of darkness into light is a sign of becoming one of the righteous and pious. For a poor person, this dream signifies wealth. For an unbeliever or a sinner, it is interpreted as guidance. If a person sees the world in continual daylight and light, it signifies uprightness in his affairs, long life, good deeds, and elevation to a lofty rank.
Seeing one's own house in darkness and gloom is a sign of a long journey. It has been said: Night and day signify two rulers opposed to each other. Night signifies the unbeliever, and day the Muslim.
Imam al-Nabulsi said: Sometimes seeing the night also signifies death. For Allah Most High takes the souls of those who sleep and cuts the outward ties of their spirits with the body. And day signifies resurrection after death. If a man sees morning come after the night, it signifies recovering from illness to well-being. Sometimes this dream is a sign of death. For one who is in prison, it signifies release from prison; for a sinner, repentance; and for an unbeliever, guidance. Night seen in a dream sometimes signifies concealing one's affairs and being safe from fear and hardship.
Seeing the blessed nights such as the Night of Power, the Night of Absolution, and the Night of Wishes signifies all kinds of good, blessings, and glad tidings.
Seeing the night before Friday is the same. The nights of the festivals signify glad tidings, joy, happiness, and a good outcome.
