Classical interpretations

Seeing the sea signifies a powerful and just ruler upon whom people depend; for a merchant it may signify wealth, and for a worker, the master.

Drinking all its water signifies possessing many worldly blessings and long life.

Ja'far al-Sadiq interprets the sea through ruler, leading person, scholar, knowledge, wealth, and work.

Ibn Sirin says walking on the sea without wetting one's feet signifies salvation from Hellfire and righteousness; walking on it may also signify travel, relief from grief, and great good. Crossing the sea signifies overcoming grief and gaining spoils from an enemy; bathing in it signifies release from sins and sorrow, and for the sick or indebted, healing or relief.

Drinking its water signifies knowledge in proportion to what is drunk. Drowning has several readings in the source, including worldly wealth, death, or martyrdom when one dies in the water. The sea may also signify trial, Hell, travel, war, rain, remembrance of God, and the world itself. Daniel says a clear calm sea signifies a just ruler, while a troubled muddy sea signifies a tyrannical ruler. Jabir al-Maghribi says the sea drying up signifies the ruler's death, weakening of his army, or defeat.
