Classical interpretations
Of all things in the world, the one most in need of being guarded like a treasure is a person's tongue. For this reason, the tongue seen in a dream is its owner's interpreter and the one who carries out his affairs.
Seeing oneself move one's tongue is interpreted as error. Whoever keeps silent finds safety, but those who keep silent are very few.
Seeing oneself argue with someone and seeing one's tongue long signifies speaking shamelessly. If a person sees black hair grow on his tongue, it is a sign of an evil that will appear at once; if he sees white hair grow, it is a sign of an evil that will appear later. Sometimes seeing the tongue signifies perfection, beauty, proof, conduct, and fame. If a head of state sees his tongue cut off, this dream signifies the death of the one who acts as his interpreter. If a person who has a court case sees his tongue cut off, it signifies that his evidence will come to nothing and that he will lose the case, and that person will be crushed. If a married man sees his wife's tongue cut off, it is a sign that his wife is a chaste and modest woman. Conversely, if a wife sees her husband's tongue cut off, it is a sign that she is teasing him.
Seeing one's tongue stuck to one's jaw is interpreted as denying a right or a trust left with oneself.
Seeing one's tongue split in two is interpreted as lying.
Seeing oneself lose one's own tongue signifies the death of a nursing infant. If a scholar sees his tongue cut off, it is a sign of defeat in dispute and debate. Sometimes that scholar's servant, student, or child dies.
Seeing one's tongue disappear signifies an enemy rejoicing over a calamity that will befall oneself, one's family, one's relatives, or one's neighbors.
Seeing oneself stick out one's tongue at someone is a sign of being mocked among the people. If a poet sees his tongue being cut, it signifies wealth and blessing that will come from the one who cuts it. Al-Nabulsi said: "If a man sees that he is a den and that there is a lion in that den, the den is that man's mouth and the lion is his tongue. Letting his lion loose upon the people to devour and tear them apart signifies that he harms and hurts people with his tongue."
