Seeing Hell in a dream signifies major sins, since Hell is the place of punishment for sinners.

Entering Hell signifies poverty and hardship, grief and sorrow in worldly life, and punishment in the Hereafter.

Ja'far al-Sadiq interprets Hell as sinfulness and disbelief, distress and grief, evil and corruption, or famine and misery.

Ibn Kathir says it may signify the loss of wealth and honor, falling from prosperity into poverty and hardship, imprisonment, worldly loss, humiliation, and dying without faith.

Seeing Malik, the guardian of Hell, signifies the love of Allah, His Messenger, and the believers, as well as honor, authority, freedom from hypocrisy, deliverance from sins, and diligence in religion. Al-Nabulsi says entering Hell with one's sword drawn signifies obscene and wicked speech; entering it smiling signifies sinful rebellion against one's Lord and delight in worldly pleasures.

Ibn Sirin says entering Hell may signify loss of wealth, falling into severe questioning, following innovation in religion, or places involving fire such as a bathhouse or oven. Escaping Hell signifies repentance from sin. Sitting in Hell, eating its food, or drinking its drink signifies persistence in sin. Being seized by Malik or another guardian and thrown into the Fire signifies humiliation.

Entering Hell and then leaving it signifies entering Paradise and repenting of sins and faults.

Seeing oneself in Hell with a blackened face and blue eyes signifies friendship with the enemies of Allah.

Seeing Hell open signifies punishment from the ruler or from Allah. Hell may also signify loss of rank, poverty after wealth, estrangement after companionship, lasting imprisonment, and humiliation.

Seeing the guardian of Hell turn toward the dreamer signifies safety from the Fire; seeing one of Hell's guardians may signify being seized and questioned by the police. For a prisoner, seeing the guardian smile signifies release. Being permanently imprisoned in Hell without knowing when one entered signifies poverty, deprivation, and sorrow in worldly life.
