Classical interpretations
Paradise is the abode of happiness prepared by Almighty Allah for His believing servants and a manifestation of His mercy.
Seeing Paradise therefore signifies goodness and glad tidings.
Seeing it clearly signifies attaining what one desires; entering it signifies safety and joy in both worlds.
Seeing the keeper of Paradise signifies joy, blessing, a pure life, and safety from affliction.
Ja'far al-Sadiq says entering Paradise may signify a mosque, a gathering of remembrance, a marketplace, Hajj, jihad in the path of Allah, or knowledge and righteous deeds. It may also signify performing good and accepted deeds that lead to Paradise.
Drinking the milk, wine, or water of Paradise signifies knowledge, wisdom, blessing, sound belief, and following the Prophetic Sunnah.
Eating the fruits of Paradise signifies provision according to what was eaten. Being told, “May you enter Paradise,” signifies inheritance, knowledge, and guidance, and may also signify release from sorrow.
Entering Paradise with one's wife signifies living well with her in this world.
Entering one of the palaces of Paradise signifies high rank, deeds that bring honor, prosperity, wealth, and a good end.
Entering Paradise, drinking from its rivers, eating its fruits, sitting in the shade of its trees, and seeing its houris and youthful attendants signifies knowledge, guidance, provision, offspring, long life, and dying as a martyr.
Seeing one of Paradise's gates closed against oneself signifies the death of one parent; seeing all its gates closed and not opening signifies disobedience to one's parents and their displeasure.
Entering through whichever gate one wishes signifies parental approval. It is also said that entering Paradise may signify that death is near and that one's destination has been shown.
Seeing Paradise thrown into Hell signifies selling a vineyard, garden, or similar green property.
Drinking from al-Kawthar signifies leadership, victory over enemies, and strength.
Seeing oneself in a palace of Paradise signifies marrying a beautiful woman and becoming a leader over people.
Entering Paradise while engaged in remembrance and glorification signifies entering it through night prayer, tasbih, and tahlil; entering through the gate of al-Rayyan signifies entering because of fasting. Al-Nabulsi says the rivers of Paradise are interpreted according to what they contain: a river of water signifies provision, milk signifies the natural disposition, wine signifies ecstasy arising from love of Allah and hatred of what He has forbidden, and honey signifies knowledge and the Qur'an. Jabir al-Maghribi says seeing the Garden of Ridwan and rejoicing in it signifies great joy and blessing; seeing oneself in a lofty place thought to be Paradise signifies reaching a just ruler, a virtuous scholar, or a wealthy and generous man. Holding the key to Paradise signifies dying upon Islam and divine unity. Sitting beneath the Tuba tree signifies fulfillment of one's desires in this world and the next.
Drinking sherbet or milk in Paradise signifies becoming learned, wise, and wealthy.
Seeing a tree of Paradise signifies a person who acts according to knowledge, a spiritual guide who directs people, or the houris. Possessing trees of Paradise or making something from them signifies children and women.
Entering Paradise without eating its fruit, drinking its rivers, or making use of its blessings signifies gaining no benefit from the knowledge one possesses. Being expelled from Paradise signifies poverty, in reference to the story of Adam. Circumambulating in Paradise signifies expanded provision, elevated standing, and safety from fear and danger.
Entering Paradise may also signify lawful wealth, kindness to one's family, fear of Allah, possession of gardens and orchards, useful benefits, and abundant provision.
Seeing all people enter Paradise signifies abundance and blessing in that year, justice from the ruler, and blessing in fruit, grain, and agriculture.
Entering Paradise holding a book signifies knowledge and righteous deeds; entering with wealth and livestock signifies attaining Paradise by paying alms on one's property.
Eating bananas in Paradise and sitting in their shade signifies attaining one's desire. Not knowing when one entered Paradise signifies lasting honor and blessing in worldly life.
Entering Paradise smiling signifies frequent remembrance of Allah; entering with a drawn sword signifies commanding good, forbidding evil, blessing, praise, and commendation.
