Classical interpretations

Seeing a preacher signifies purity, humility, repentance from sins, and weeping; it may also signify elevation of one's name, long life, or reaching the ruler of the believers. It signifies commanding good and forbidding evil, relief, and gathering during the Hajj season. For an unmarried woman, seeing a preacher signifies marriage to a preacher. A non-Muslim ascending the pulpit and delivering a sermon signifies guidance and becoming Muslim. A woman delivering a sermon of admonition signifies power and strength, but speaking other kinds of words in the sermon is interpreted unfavorably and as public disgrace. A governor who cannot finish the sermon is said to be dismissed.

Seeing oneself as a preacher signifies office, while preaching in white rather than black clothing signifies increased honor and provision.

Seeing a preacher signifies receiving admonition and counsel from the Qur'an, the Sunnah, or something else. At times, seeing a preacher signifies great people and things from whom advice and counsel are taken.

Seeing oneself preaching from a pulpit signifies honor and dignity, being remembered by a good name, and following the noble Sunnah, for pulpits are places of admonition and the stations of the prophets.

Seeing a preacher come to a sick man signifies that sick person's death, because it is stated in a noble hadith: 'Death is sufficient as a preacher for you.'
