Classical interpretations

Seeing a mihrab signifies an imam or leader.

Seeing the imam pray in the mihrab signifies following him. Praying in a mihrab outside the proper prayer time signifies good and public office that one's children and descendants will attain after oneself. Letting one, two, or three drops of urine fall in the mihrab signifies, for each drop, a pure child. Praying in the mihrab is also good news for the dreamer.

Ibn Kathir said that seeing a mihrab signifies lawful livelihood and a righteous wife.

Seeing the mihrab of a mosque turned away from the qibla signifies innovation in religion and hypocrisy. Urinating in the mihrab signifies glad tidings of a male child who, when grown, will become a leader of people. Al-Nabulsi said that identifying the mihrabs in houses with one's fingers signifies that those places will pass to male children; if there are no male children, they will belong to an endowment. Sometimes seeing a mihrab signifies lawful livelihood and a righteous wife, in accordance with the Qur'anic verse about Zechariah entering the mihrab and finding provision with Mary.
