Classical interpretations

Seeing a pen signifies knowledge, commanding what is right, forbidding what is wrong, and a child.

Seeing a pen in one's hand signifies a child, an official position, and joy.

Seeing the pen broken, lost, or stolen signifies loss and harm. Al-Nabulsi said: The pen signifies a sultan, scholar, judge, tongue, sword, or any person and means by which a person gains honor and prestige and carries out judgments.

Seeing a pen filled with ink signifies a male child for a pregnant woman.

Seeing a pen also signifies an oath, in accordance with the verse, "By the pen and what they write" (al-Qalam 68:1). Sometimes a pen signifies generosity and goodness. The pen also signifies a person and the keeper of that person's secrets. At times it signifies victory over an enemy, a good name, and being spoken of well among people.

Seeing the Pen of Divine Decree in a beautiful form signifies knowledge, memorization, a great craft, long life, and provision.
