Classical interpretations
Cooked meat signifies lawful wealth, while raw meat signifies pain, illness, and suffering. Fresh meat may signify death and backbiting.
Ja'far al-Sadiq interprets meat through wealth, inheritance, sorrow, and calamity. Meat cooked in a pot signifies provision and blessing. Bird meat signifies frequent travel and benefit and may also signify good deeds that draw a person toward Paradise. For a poor person, a cooked dish with meat signifies wealth; one without meat signifies worship or need. Danyal says cooked meat signifies good and benefit obtained pleasantly, while roasted meat signifies pain, illness, distress, and wealth gained with hardship.
Eating one's own flesh signifies backbiting relatives and doing something one will regret. Roasting meat may signify unlawful wealth. Roasted ram meat signifies the dreamer's illness; lamb or kid meat the illness of a child or servant; ewe meat the illness of a wife or mother.
Abu Sa'id al-Wa'iz says an unidentified piece of meat signifies calamity, fresh meat death, salted meat blessing after calamity, and minced meat loss. Pastrami signifies backbiting the dead. Chicken meat signifies benefit through a woman; beef hardship and little work; duck meat benefit through righteous men.
Eating cooked meat with an old man signifies increased standing with rulers. Roasted beef signifies safety from fear and may also signify provision and abundance. Human flesh signifies victory over an enemy; unknown meat and blood signify victory but also strife. Al-Nabulsi says one's own flesh appearing black, blue, or falling in pieces signifies severe punishment or illness.
