Classical interpretations

Seeing an unknown bird signifies Azrael, the Angel of Death, since he is often called the bird of death. If an unknown bird takes something from a house where someone is ill and flies into the sky, it signifies the death of the sick person in that house.

Seeing a bird fall upon oneself signifies the arrival of a guest. Large birds signify kings, leaders, scholars, merchants, and wealthy people. Water birds signify honorable people who have attained leadership in two respects and received special duties from two rulers.

Seeing many birds flying above one's head signifies, if one is qualified, becoming governor or leader of a city. The sound of birds signifies loud weeping. Birds singing with beautiful voices, whether male or female, signify vocal performers. Flocks of birds signify gold, silver, and dominion for the person who eats them or encounters them.

Seeing a bird come down from the sky and land beside oneself signifies the arrival of glad news.

Ibn Sirin said that seeing a large bird signifies lofty aspiration.

Seeing birds singing together in a place signifies sorrow, grief, and hardship for that place. Speaking with a bird signifies honor and dignity; seeing a bird die in one's hand signifies grief and sorrow.

Seeing a bird come and perch on one's head signifies benefit, advantage, and good provision.

Seeing a sparrow signifies a person of high rank; finding one signifies affection and companionship with such a person.

Finding or acquiring a female sparrow signifies marriage to an honorable and chaste woman.

Seeing a sparrow in one's hand fly away and never return signifies the death of a son or daughter.
