Feeling great relief and openness of heart signifies repentance from sin and acceptance of repentance. For someone in distress, it signifies release from sorrow. If the joy is caused by wealth the heart does not approve of, it signifies sorrow; it may also signify distance from worship and obedience. Joy arising from good news such as recovery of a sick person, release of a prisoner, or safety of an oppressed person signifies genuinely joyful conditions.

Ibn Sirin says being made joyful by someone may signify sorrow, while Ja'far al-Sadiq says causeless joy can signify the nearness of death. The entry also preserves the contrary traditional view that joy in a dream may signify grief.
