Ja'far al-Sadiq said that seeing a letter is interpreted in six ways: authority; proof; strength; benefit; wisdom; and leadership. Being given a letter signifies attaining every kind of good and strength. Receiving a letter from the head of state, or having one sent by him, signifies a high office; if the dreamer is suited to it, he is appointed to an important position. Giving letters to people signifies doing good to people, righteous deeds, and livelihood.
Abu Sa'id al-Wa'iz said that seeing a written paper in one's right hand signifies that the year will pass in abundance and blessing, while seeing a written paper in one's left hand signifies an undertaking that will end in regret.
