Ja'far al-Sadiq said:
- Hunger in a dream is interpreted in four ways: goodness, greed, sin, and tama'—excessive or long-held desire.

If rulers or prominent people see themselves hungry, it signifies the humiliation and distress of their people, and that those people may set their eyes on the people's wealth.

Seeing oneself hungry and unable to find food indicates that greed and excessive desire will bring no benefit and that one will not attain good throughout life.

For a person of knowledge and wisdom, seeing oneself hungry signifies a decline in rank.

For people of asceticism and piety, hunger signifies fasting; it may also signify attaining piety, remembrance, and gratitude.

Al-Maghribi said:
- Whoever sees themselves hungry and then fills their stomach with good food remains steadfast in repentance.

Seeing oneself remain hungry for a long time signifies receiving blessing after poverty. Hunger may also signify famine, transgression, and poverty.
