Classical interpretations
If a person sees an elephant in a dream, it signifies a ruler who is imposing and hard-hearted, takes on weighty affairs, and is versed in the art of war.
Seeing oneself ride an elephant or own one is a sign of drawing near to the head of state and of a high rank that will come from him. His holiness Ibn Sirin said: Seeing oneself ride an elephant at night is a sign of marrying a woman.
Seeing oneself ride an elephant by day signifies separating from one's wife or selling one's servant. Sometimes riding an elephant, in whatever way, also signifies honor, good fortune, and esteem.
Ja'far al-Sadiq said: Seeing an elephant in a dream is interpreted as follows: a) the king of Persia, b) an envious man, c) a strong man, d) a cruel shedder of blood, e) war and enmity... Kirmani also says this: Seeing an elephant in a dream signifies a sultan; riding an elephant, a high office; and its hide, flesh, bones, and so on signify benefit and blessing.
Seeing an elephant tear some part of oneself is a sign of a calamity that will reach the dreamer from the ruler. If a sick person sees this dream, it is interpreted as his death. If a person sees himself take something from an elephant's trunk, it signifies lawful wealth and benefit that will come from the sultan. It has been said: An elephant seen in a dream is a generous, liberal, patient, capable, gentle, and strong king.
Seeing an elephant strike oneself with its trunk signifies goodness and blessing. If he rode the elephant, he will be appointed to high offices.
Seeing oneself take something from an elephant's dung signifies abundant wealth and growing rich. Again, seeing an elephant speak to oneself is a sign of a great good that will reach one from the king. It has been said: If a person sees an elephant in a city other than Medina, it signifies hardship and lamentation.
Seeing an elephant in Medina, the city of light, signifies a sultan, a person of bounty, or an honorable person. Al-Nabulsi said: An elephant signifies a righteous people, scholars, and the honorable among people. Again, an elephant signifies falling into great hardships, troubles, and toil, and afterwards being delivered from them. For the elephant comes into the world with toil and trouble.
Seeing an elephant run after oneself and drive one on signifies harm that will reach one from the head of state.
Seeing an elephant seize oneself is a sign of calamity and harm that will come from the enemy. There is no goodness or blessing in women seeing an elephant in a dream.
