Allah
Classical interpretations
May Allah Most High cleanse our faults with the pure water of His forgiveness. Nothing happens unless He wills. No good fortune is attained unless the sun of His generosity shines upon the mirror of the heart. He possesses such power and majesty that minds fall to the ground in astonishment before His power and grandeur.
He is One and Unique. There is no possibility of any equal, likeness, or peer.
Seeing Him in His majesty and glory, in a manner beyond form, without equal or likeness, signifies good. A person granted such a dream receives glad tidings in this world, and their Hereafter is one of safety and happiness.
Ahmad ibn Hanbal, one of the imams of our schools of law, saw his Lord in a dream and asked Him:
- My Lord! What is the best of the things that bring Your chosen servants near to You?
The answer came from his Lord:
- O Ahmad! That they read My word.
- With understanding, or without understanding?
- With understanding and without understanding.
This account indicates that great and saintly people may see their Lord in dreams in a manner we cannot comprehend. A dream is not seen merely by wishing for it; it is shown to a person.
It is related that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) addressed his Companions and said:
- The best thing any of you sees in a dream is to see Allah, his Prophet, or his Muslim mother and father.
The Companions asked:
- O Messenger of Allah, can a person see his Lord in a dream?
He replied:
- He sees the Sultan, and the Sultan is Allah Most High.
If a person dreams that Allah Most High will forgive them and admit them into Paradise, it indicates that the person is under Allah's watch and fears standing before their Lord.
Seeing a veil between oneself and Allah Most High is interpreted as a grave sin.
Seeing Allah's Throne in a dream signifies good. Speaking with one's Lord signifies reciting the Qur'an very often, for the Qur'an is the word of Allah.
